In this very special installment of What's On My Dining Room Table, I am also starting another blog post series, detailing the development of the Movie Dice game. I'll try to update on the process as it goes along.....

Unrelated to the Movie Plotz Party Game I am marketing now, I also have been working on Movie Dice, a tabletop game about the movie business that uses a lot of dice!

I playtested this at a recent meeting of the Philadelphia Game Experiment at Redcap's Corner and was very excited by the results.

The game presents an amusing (and cynical?) look at the Hollywood movie machine, as players each take on the role of a rising film producer, saddled with skyrocketing budgets, studio demands, tabloid scandals and always hoping to (one day!) make their dream project.

That first test was basically to see how the dice system itself worked, and I was pleased to see the system created a good amount of tension and frustration (in a good way!) to simulate the film producer's world.

Today's challenge: work on the timeline/calendar system. (that's what you see in this photo)
The players secretly plan their movie budgets and production schedules using a shared yearly calendar. I finally came up with a way to simulate top-secret production schedules (and the all-important top secret movie release date) with a fun way that also allows manipulation to try to get best box office results, or to undermine competitors' movies. I feel the final system is a good way to simulate time for this process.

Next step:
Will redesign the actual look of the yearly calendar, and the look of the player's playmats, then develop the movie genre sub-system (players have control over the exact movie genres their movies are).

Until next time!......
